In response to demands from the US market, the Maserati Spyder was added to the Biturbo range in 1984, following its launch at the Turin Motor Show in November. Styled by Zagato and assembled at their factory in Milan, the Spyder was mechanically identical to te Biturbo coupe, save for its wheelbase now shortened by nearly 12 cm (4.5 in) to 2,4 metres (94.5 in) with styling by Zagato of Milan, where it was also assembled.

It was powered by the same 2.0 litre engine found on the Biturbo coupe. The Spyder was eqipped with a mechanically folding roof with Alcantara headlining. Launched with leather interior and the now famous golden oval Lassale Maserati watch on the dashboard. Four-time F1 champion Alain Prost and Sir Elton John were known to have owned a Biturbo Spyder.
