Maserati presented a new model at the 74th International Motor Show in Geneva in March 2004.

The new model, called the GranSport, epitomised the sporty nature typical of all Trident Granturismo cars. The GranSport name hailed from the best traditions of the marque: in the 1950s it was adopted for an elegant 2-litre coupé designed by Carrozzeria Frua on the frame of the famous A6 G. The new Gransport was an alternative to the Coupé from which it was distinguished by a series of aesthetic modifications that gave it a strong temperament.

The GranSport was a more aggressive alternative to the regular Coupé GT, which celebrated the sporting soul at the heart of the car by offering more power and even sharper handling in a model focused on delivering high performance. The GranSport looked especially purposeful with its deep front spoiler, airflow-controlling side sills, discreet bootlid spoiler lip, chrome grille, lowered ride height and larger, 19" Trofeo racing-style alloy wheels.

The 4.2-litre V8 engine punched out 400 bhp (up 10 bhp on the Coupé GT) through a deep-rumble sports exhaust system and the Cambiocorsa paddle-shift six-speed transmission offers 35 per cent faster gear changes (in Sport mode) and a five per cent higher top (6th) gear ratio compared to the Coupé GT.
