12th CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE “TROFEO SALVAROLA TERME

Around 60 marvellous cars participated in the 12th Concours d'Elegance “Trofeo Salvarola Terme”, preview of the Modena Terra di Motori event, that ended in the Piazza Grande in Modena after having visited Salvarola and Sassuolo.

Magnificent, refined, completely "dressed up” and above all still roaring as they did in their time. We are talking about the 60 ladies of the circuit who participated in the Concours d’élégance TROFEO “SALVAROLA TERME” at Salvarola Terme, Sassuolo and Modena. But the undoubtable queen of the event was declared that afternoon in Piazza Grande was the the 1955 Alfa Romeo 1900 Supersprint Zagato of Ermanno Keller, winner of the “Best of Show 2011” award. So the snake triumphed at the 12th Concours d’Élégance “Trofeo Salvarola Terme” who hosted the Maserati marque as its “Special Guest 2011”, founded in Bologna in 1914 and then transferred to Modena. To the delight of the enthusiasts who queued at Salvarola, Sassuolo and in Piazza Grande in Modena to see the many tens of the most beautiful models from the history of the Trident.

As well as "Best of Show", other important trophies were awarded both in the Maserati class, as well as other marques. In the “Maserati ruggenti” (The Roaring Maseratis) class the winner was the spendid 1954 Maserati A6G 2000 by Allemano of Umberto Panini; in the “le scoperte del Tridente” (the open-top Maseratis) class in first place was the 1970 Maserati Ghibli SS Spyder of Marcello Candini; in the “Viaggiando da re” (Travelling like a King) class the award went to the 1985 Maserati Quattroporte Royale of Federico Malaguti whilst in the “Gran Passione” (Grand Passion) class the 1977 Maserati Khamsin of Alberto Caprari came up trumps; in the “Al volante sognando” (Dreaming at the wheel) class the prize went to the Maserati Mexico 4700 of the German Rolf Schiemenz, whilst in the “il bello delle debuttanti” (The of the debutant) class the trophy ended up in the hands of Marco Cubiano for his 2010 Maserati GranCabrio. The final award in the cars of the Trident category, the "primo assoluto della classe Maserati" (the overall winner of the Maserati class), went to Nicola Sculco and his beautiful 1956 Maserati 200 S.

ABARTH 695 TRIBUTO MASERATI

The Fiat Group's Abarth, having successfully launched a limited edition "Cinquecento" to honour Ferrari, have now turned their attentions to Maserati with a new Abarth 695 Tributo Maserati due to be unveiled at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show.

The Abarth 695 Tributo Maserati...

...enhanced by its rich burgundy paint finish

The interior is finished in a sandy beige Poltrona Frau leather

Only 499 examples of the new Abarth 695 Tributo Maserati will be produced, all powered by the same four cylinder 1.4-litre 180 bhp turbocharged engine as the Tributo Ferrari, but will be shod with new 17-inch alloys.

The new Maserati version, also featuring the 500C's retractable roof, will be aesthetically more elegant than its predecessor, in line with the Trident marque's long tradition, enhanced by its burgundy paint finish and sandy beige Poltrona Frau leather interior.

2002 MASERATI SPYDER

"Hello Enrico,

Any instructions, advise or pics on replacing a heater core for an 2002 Maserati Spyder?

I have also seen it referred to as a heater matrix located behind the center console. It is leaking.

Attached are two pics I found on the US Maserati Forum of the heater and where it should be deep in the dash.

The third pic is my progress at the point when I asked for your advise. The center console, dash top and speedometer cluster are removed.

The progress made so far by Jason

I am stumped as to removing the rest of the dash and especially the globe box/air bag.

Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you,

Jason."

"Perfect, Enrico!

You’ve been very accommodating.

Here are a few pictures. I’m near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US.

My Spyder is beautiful and very comfortable. Powerful. I've only had the top down once due to the cold weather here and the heater core leak.

Could use a wheel alignment and I’ll change the fluids and filters soon.

Are you an enthusiast or a mechanic? Or both?

Jason."

Glad to be of help.

I'm just a simple enthusiast. I wish I were a mechanic, I could help so many more owners if I were.

RENOWNED SAILORS ARRIVING IN CHARLESTON

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two of the world's renowned sailors are arriving in Charleston with a racing yacht and their international crew.

The Maserati Racing Yacht

Giovanni Soldini of Italy and American Brad Van Liew bring the 70-foot sailing yacht Maserati into a marina on the Cooper River on Wednesday.

The yacht and crew just set a record for the so-called Route of Discovery crossing from Cadiz, Spain to San Salvador in the Bahamas. That's the route Christopher Columbus took to the Americas in 1492.

©Joe O'Neill

The Maserati sailed along the Cooper River Wednesday after returning from a record sailing trip. (Joe O'Neill)

Soldini won the Around Alone yacht race that ended in Charleston in 1999. Van Liew is a Charleston resident who last year won the VELUX 5 OCEANS solo around the world race.

The Maserati crew is comprised of sailors from Italy, Germany and Spain.

On their last night, the crew had a technical problem with the hydraulic system for the keel, so during thier stay the yacht will be completely overhauled.

Italian sailor Giovanni Soldini has spent the last 18 years sailing, twice around the world solo.

"It's not an easy course, but we did it in a nice time," Soldini said. "We were pretty lucky. We caught very good wind. It was very fast."

The crew is far from finishing setting records. According to fellow crew member Van Liew, they will now set sail to the gulf stream for a record setting attempt. Following this, they will return to Charleston before heading to Miami where they will attempt a record sail to New York City. The most prestigious, according to Van Liew, comes next when they are expected to head from New York City to England.

MASERATI-ENGINED BATMOBILE

Ciao Maseratisti,

Just when you think you've seen it all, something new turns up.

The something new is in the shape of a Maserati-engined Batmobile by Sig Mauro Fusco. Built by Eugenio Bellotti and Luigi Antonio Fusco, this Batmobile is powered by a 2.0-litre V6 Biturbo engine and weighing in at only 890 Kg is capable of a top speed of some 238 Km/h.

Mauro has based his recreation on the Batmobile as seen in Batman: The Animated Series.

"The Batmobile in Batman: The Animated Series combined style elements from various eras to produce a long, low vehicle with square lines, long fins, and a blunt nose with a massive matt black chromed grille that could have been from any time from the 1930s to the 1990s. This version of the Batmobile also vaguely resembled the Batmobile from the first two Tim Burton movies (Batmobile from Wikipedia)."

This Batmobile recreation is currently for sale and all serious enquiries should be made to Mauro Fusco at

The car was built by my father and a friend of his who runs a body shop in the province of Piacenza, south of Milan. The idea came from the model you see in one of the photos, and my father, being a professor of mechanical technology, took care of the more technical side, whilst his friend, the carrozziere, was involved with the aesthetic and functional side.

For the analysis phase, (there is no a real and propoer project on paper), the proportions have been estimated, because the proportions expressed by the model were impossible to maintain, as the car would have been over 6 metres long!

The Maserati engine was chosen because of its lower vertical profile, allowing us to keep the long bonnet very low. To increase this characteristic, the bonnet could be mooulded around the engine block, permitting a cut-out that allowed the Maserati badge on the plenum chamber to protrude through the bonnet, with an aesthetically beautiful result.

The chassis was hand built to fit around the engine and key mechanical components, such as the wheels and steering box. The chassis has been constructed with tubular steel.

The front suspension is completely handmade. The car's interior, with the two seats in tandem, was designed and constructed to allow for a streamlined appearance.

The rear section has been designed and constructed so that it can be folded back on itself, allowing the car to be loaded onto and unloaded from the ramps of a car transporter.

The rear section has been designed to allow the exhaust system to be routed in manner that the tail pipes exit from within the rear central fan, that is operated from a control switch inside the cockpit, creating a very pleasant visual effect!

The car drives very well, as one can also appreciate from the video at /www.youtube.com/watch, and it also produces the noise of a true Maserati! The pictures say a thousand words!

The car was also equipped with No. 2 independent hand brakes, allowing for spectacular doughnuts.

Will provide, as per your advice, to find the engine number. Remember, that this example is unique in the world, a version of this particular Batmobile having never been made before. In 1997, the car won the award for "Best Original Car" at a very important national event, with prize giving on the track at the Imola circuit, as evidenced by the photo of the car on the starting grid.

I have other photos of the construction phase, and I will send them to you as soon as possible so that you can include them with those of the finished car.

WANGO TANGO LYRICS

"And, by the way, I don't know if you know the song Wango Tango by Ted Nugent, but it talks about the Maserati Biturbo !

Here is the song: www.youtube.com.

And here are the relevant lyrics:

All right! It's zee Wango, zee Tango
1-2-3-4
Come on boys
Time to Wango ...

... You know what I been talkin' about honey
It's a nice dance, we gotta a nice dance goin' here
Now what you gotta do, I'll tell you what you gotta do
You got to pretend your face is a Maserati
It's a Maserati
It's a Maserati
It's a gettin' hotty
It's a Maserati, Maserati, Maserati
It's a fast one too man, that thing's turbocharged
You feel like a little fuel injection honey?
I'll tell ya about it, I'll tell you about it
I'll check out the hood scoop
I gotta get that hood scoop off
shine and shine and buff
I gotta buff it up, buff it up
buff it up, buff it up, buff it up,

Yeah, shiny now baby, heh heh heh
You've been drivin' all night long
It's time to put the old Maserati away
So you look for a garage, you think you see a garage
Wait a minute, Hey!, there's one up ahead
And the damn thing's open
Hello! Get in there! ...

... Wango Wango
Tango Tango
Wango Wango Wango Wango

MASERATI CROSSES THE FINISHING LINE
AT SAN SALVADOR AT 10 HOURS 59 MINS 10 SECS GMT

Giovanni Soldini and his team establish an excellent time reference for the Cadiz-San Salvador record

Maserati crosses the finish line at San Salvador

Giovanni Soldini and his crew took 10 days, 23 hours, 9 minutes and 2 seconds to travel the 3884 miles of the orthodromic route which links Cadiz to San Salvador, thus establishing an excellent time reference – the first – for the monohull category.

Having set sail from Cadiz on 2 February at h 11 50' 08'' GMT, they travelled 4632 real miles at an average speed of 17.6 knots.

“I’m extremely pleased,” declared Soldini immediately after crossing the finish line. “We’ve established an excellent time reference, which will be very difficult to beat. The only fly in the ointment was the last night, which was really rough. We had a technical problem with the hydraulic system for the keel, which doesn’t move any more. We were all awake, and sailed with a fixed, central keel, but obviously it slowed us down. In any case, we couldn’t have hoped for a better result. We were spot on with all our choices regarding the weather, and I’m really pleased with how the boat and the crew performed.”

The VOR 70 Maserati will carry on, without stopping, to Charleston, South Carolina, where it will be completely overhauled.

After the work, Giovanni Soldini and his team will attempt to beat the 24-hour speed record.

The number of Maserati challenge enthusiasts continues to rise. 31,000 individual users to date have visited the new site http://maserati.soldini.it/. 61,000 followers of Giovanni Soldini on Twitter, 11,000 fans of Soldini on Facebook.

The record attempt can be followed, almost live, on Giovanni Soldini and Maserati’s new website (www.maserati.soldini.it). The site contains news, videos and photos of life on board, and provides continuous monitoring of the marine weather conditions, as well as online tracking to check, in real time, the position and speed of Maserati. Continuous updates are also available on the Facebook (Giovanni Soldini’s official page) and Twitter (@giovannisoldini; @borisherrmann; @BradVanLiew) social networking sites.

The challenge is being sponsored by Maserati, as main partner and inspiration for the boat’s name, by the Swiss bank BSI (Generali Group) and by Generali itself, as co-sponsor.

MASERATI

Maserati’s support and participation in this major Italian challenge in sport and technology confirms the company’s role as a world ambassador for that level of excellence for which Italy is universally known. Maserati gives zealous expression to that excellence every day in 65 countries worldwide, through successful high-quality cars like the Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio. The performance of Maserati cars on the road matches that of Giovanni Soldini and Maserati on water.

BSI and Generali

BSI is one of Switzerland’s oldest banks and specialises in private wealth management through top-flight global management. BSI is a fully controlled member of the Generali Group, and fields a presence on all major international financial markets, especially in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Generali is one of the world’s largest international insurance groups with offices in over 60 countries. The group boasts a robust footprint in Europe, EEC member states, Asia and Latin America, serving over 70 million customers. The Generali Group is a European leader in life insurance with assets of over 400 billion euros.

Official suppliers for the attempt include Vodafone Italia, responsible for providing telecommunication services and developing the official website, the marine clothing brand Murphy & Nye, who have supplied the clothing for the entire Maserati team, official time keeper Bulgari, and Boero Bartolomeo S.p.A., producers of the special paints and enamels used on the hull.

Maserati is also sponsored by Eataly, suppliers to the boat’s galley, Beta Utensili, who have provided all the professional tools, Corderia Lancelin, supplier of the special ropes and cables, FPT Industrial for technical assistance with the engines, Jeppesen for the cartography, B&G Navico for technical assistance with on-board instrumentation, Cantiere Picchiotti of La Spezia, home of Maserati on dry land, and the Port of La Spezia, home of Maserati when at sea.
