BRUNO PERICARDI

Photo courtesy of the ‘Johnny Spero Collection’

"It is with regret that I have to pass on the news of the death of Bruno Pericardi, who died in hospital on Friday 15th October.

From South London Italian stock and having served an engineering apprenticeship at Daimler, Bruno Pericardi was a well-known figure in the early entrepreneurial days of the London Mews ‘Kensington Car set’, being the race mechanic to Nobby Spero, spannering Spero’s mighty ex-Witney Straight Maserati 8CM to great effect in VSCC events and later the ex-Musso, Behra, Gould Maserati 250F (driven by Spero’s son -Johnny), which won the Motoring News historic race car championship in 1965.

During the late 1960s he ran a mews garage in Ladbroke Grove under the name of ‘Pericars’ but this was constraining for the sociable race mechanic. He was now race mechanic to Johnny Spero, running the ex-Dan Margulies 911 and ex-Tony Dean 906 Porsches across Europe at evocative circuits such as Montjuic and Mugello. Later working as a freelance mechanic, Bruno’s considerable talents were in great demand with the Kensington area classic car dealers such as Danny Margulies, Charles Howard, Frank Dale, Johnny Spero, Bill Wykeham, Julius Thurgood, Alain de Cadenet amongst many. Working with Bruno was involving, to say the least. It was never the case of ‘Bruno – just sort the carburettors on this Mistral’ – Bruno wanted the whole story of the car. Every job – no matter how minor - involved a lengthy investigation into the past history of each car, followed by a long lunch in a nearby Italian restaurant where the often lively debate on whether the car was worthy or not continued at length. Bruno’s fees were always moderate but the daily lunch bills could mount up alarmingly if the job was a long one!

In later years, Bruno kept in contact with all his customers – often appearing for lunch on an old Moto-Guzzi or in his venerable Fiat 125S. He attended all the major race festivals and recently ‘rediscovered’ Sicily, taking trips to the retrospective Targa Florio event and making many friends with the Sicilian car preparers, who enjoyed a mutual passion for tales of exotic and complex race machinery over an extended lunch!

In a world where it is now normal to see historic race cars arriving at events in F1-style transporters, manned by swathes of mechanics, characters such as Bruno Pericardi plying his trade as a as a one-man race outfit are sadly becoming an anachronism – as are those extended lunches, which are now replaced by corporate ‘hospitality’.

Ciao Bruno!

Julius Thurgood.

"Dear Enrico,

Recently the US-based Maserati forum, MaseratiLife.com, organised its first meet for owners in the Mid-Atlantic region.

A lovely turnout of Maseratis (and a few others) joined the event held in Frederick MD. It was a great success, blessed with splendid weather, delicious food and some screaming V8s!

Dakotes, the organiser, kindly agreed to share some photos and videos:

From Rolf in Germany

"Dear Enrico,

After looking for over a year and test driving 10 different Khamsins, I bought #404. A 1981 car, 2 previous owners, 14,500 km, black inside and out, and in perfect condition.

Never before I have I seen a car with such clean and undamaged floorpans, exhaust, headers etc., all exhaust parts have their numbers on little welded plates.

The interior is as new. Pictures attached.

Could you please advise me, step by step, how best to remove the air-pump and ancillary equipment from the V8 engine. Are there electric and vacuum lines connected to the system ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Kind regards,

Rolf."

"Hi Rolf,

Thnk you so much for the photos, it looks like a nice clean car. Complimenti !!

Here is a reply from Andrea:

"First remove the pump and the belt. There is an electrical connection to the pump which can be just covered.

Then remove the exhaust manifolds.

Cut off the manifold air distribution pipe and then cut out the spout that goes into each branch of the manifold.

No re-tuning is necessary.

You should leave the vacuum solenoid attached as if you remove this, your ignition timing graph will be wrong."

Regards,

Enrico."

From Tracy in the USA

"Hello:

In case anyone visiting your site is looking for a supercharger for their Pre War Grand Prix car there is currently one on Ebay. The auction started on the 21st October 2010, and runs for ten days only.

Here's the link: www.ebay.com".

Best Regards,

Tracy."

Described as:

"A used, crank driven supercharger for I believe a Maserati 4CM, Formula 1 pre World War II race car. As you can see in the pictures it has been modified to be belt driven, however, these modifications are easily reversible and in no way affect its original function. It spins freely. The case and the rotors appear to be in very good condition. It still retains the starter dog. A super rare part for a super rare car.

This was removed from the car it was modified for back in the fifties before that car was sold, and has been languishing in a private garage ever since. Some time during that period a mouse made his home in the inlet pipe and thus there is some slight corrosion and discoloration on the exposed rotors. See picture. This is not deep and should polish out easily.

This is the only Maserati F1 part I have, but I have plenty of super rare Alfa Romeo 6C 2500SS mechanical parts, some new old stock purchased back in the fifties!"

DIX MILLE TOURS by Peter Auto - 2010

"The first edition of the Dix Mille Tours on the Castellet circuit, last week-end 8, 9 and 10 October, marked the birth of a great appointment under the sign of motor sport passion. First success with a grid gathering over 220 cars making the Dix Mille Tours from the outset one of the greatest European classic car meetings.

On the menu, the now well known Classic Endurance Racing divided into two grids for the first time, the Trofeo Nastro Rosso and the Sixties’ Endurance, Peter Auto’s last creations, the Group C Racing and the F3 Classic. Three days to admire some of the most beautiful racing cars from the fifties to the early nineties.

To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the circuit, the event gathered famous motor sport figures such as Alain Prost, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Henri Pescarolo, Gérard Larrousse or Jean Guichet. Despite difficult weather conditions on Sunday, some 10,000 people were present at this “first”; an encouraging result for the next editions.

To make the event a big meeting for enthusiasts, the Dix Mille Tours offered a privileged welcome to clubs. Over two hundred cars gathered, for the pleasure of the public and the owners who were able to drive on this mythical track.

The next edition the Dix Mille Tours at the Paul Ricard HTTT is already announced for 7, 8 and 9 October 2011 in principle (otherwise the week-end before). But most of the grids of this first edition will be back for a new Peter Auto meeting, the Spa Francorchamps Classic, on 27, 28 and 29 May 2011.

Check out the Dix Mille Tours web site at www.dixmilletours.com."

Bartels/Bertolini Increase their Advantage in the Classification

Navarra, Spain 24 October - Bartels/Bertolini driving Vitaphone Racing Team’s Maserati MC12 no. 1 consolidated their leadership in the championship at the end of the eighth round of the FIA GT1 World Championship contended this weekend at the new circuit in Navarra, northern Spain.

The reigning champions earn a further eight points over their closest adversary, Thomas Mutsch, who had to leave the race due to an accident. Two rounds away from the conclusion of the championship, they are now at 130 points against the German driver’s 95. The leadership still belongs to Maserati, which is still on top in the car maker’s Trofeo SRO and team categories.

Vitaphone Racing Team’s no. 2, driven by Bernoldi/Ramos made it to the finish line in eighth place but was later set back to twelfth place due to an irregular move when resuming the race after the pit stop. The Stewards made other decisions after the race, assigning 30 extra seconds to Lamborghini no. 38 (fifth car to pass the checkered flag), thus giving the Bartels/Bertolini pair an advantage, who went from seventh to sixth place in order of arrival.

Triple H Team Hegersport’s no. 34, driven by Pier Guidi/Verdonck, was unfortunate. It reached the finish line in eleventh place after it was slowed down by a flat and consequent collision with Ford no. 6 in curve 8 during the first lap. The team’s weekend had nevertheless started out splendidly, earning second place in both the qualifying practices and in the Qualifying Race. Team-mates Mueller/Longin’s no. 33; after a sixth place during the morning’s qualifying race, was forced to leave the race when the suspension broke after an accident in curve 7 in the first lap of the Championship Race.

The final result of this race came a few hours after its conclusion due to the various penalties given.

Andrea Bertolini - Vitaphone Racing Team - no. 1: “It’s been a tough weekend because in this type of circuit the extra weight of the 50-kg ballast was really noticeable. Bartels and I were lucky: we can count on the professionalism of an outstanding crew that gave us almost three seconds at the pit stop. It’s an enormous advantage, tough to match while going round the racetrack. I have to especially praise and thank the two mechanics who did the tire change. There are only two rounds left, but we have to remain focused because anything can still happen. We’re leaving this race with a lighter ballast load and in addition, we’ve earned further points”.

The next race is scheduled on 28 November at the Interlagos, Brazil, racetrack.
