FORTY YEARS AGO, THE MASERATI QUATTROPORTE WAS PRESENTED TO ITALIAN PRESIDENT SANDRO PERTINI
 

Modena, 16 December 2019 – Maserati has always been known for cars of exceptional luxury, elegance and performance, demonstrated by the choice of Quattroporte models as the official cars of the Italian President.

On 14 December 1979 the Maserati Quattroporte 3rd generation, in both automatic and manual gear-shift, was presented to Italian President Sandro Pertini. The ceremony, held at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, was attended by the Minister of Industry and Trade, the Rt Hon Antonio Bisaglia, and the CEO of Maserati, Alejandro de Tomaso.

The Maserati Quattroporte 3rd generation (1979), designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was the first completely new car to be designed during the de Tomaso management period (1976-1993), and featured lines inspired by the first, 1963, version of the Quattroporte, although with a less sporty and more formal personality.

The Quattroporte 3rd generation was characterised by a luxurious and refined interior. It was fitted with the V8 engine, in variants of 4.2 L with 255 hp and 4.9 L with 280 hp. The top speed was 220 km/h. The car remained on the market from 1979 until 1990, with a total of 2,145 units sold.

In 1986 the "Royale" version was launched: it was a restyling with interior upgrades including soft leather seats and lavish use of burr walnut on the dashboard and door panels. Other distinctive features were the radio telephone in the compartment between the front seats and the small stow-away folding table in the rear doors. The Quattroporte Royale was equipped with a powerful 4.9 L V8 engine with 300 hp and just 51 were built withthis trim.

In 1982, the Italian President's General Secretariat placed an order with Maserati for the construction of an armoured Quattroporte for the President's use. In 1983 the Modena firm supplied a Quattroporte, in “Dark Aquamarine” colour with beige velvet interior, to President Sandro Pertini, and it became his car of choice for institutional engagements.

One of the car's original features was a large ashtray with pipe holder between the rear seats: this was requested by the President himself, and Maserati modified the rear bench to create it. The car also featured a bar cabinet, a telephone system, and an intercom for communication with people outside the car. The car's cabin was completely armoured and bullet-proof, with high-strength manganese steel plating. The windows were also armoured, 31 mm thick and made of polycarbonate with 4 electrically controlled windows.

The roof could be opened electrically above the rear seats to allow the President to stand up and greet crowds while on the move; a special handle was installed on the back of the right front seat to make this upright position safer and more comfortable.

The Head of State used the Quattroporte 3rd generation on all public occasions, including his historic visit to the Ferrari factory in Maranello on 29 May 1983. On that occasion, ceremonial etiquette demanded that once the car had entered the plant, the host, Enzo Ferrari should approach the presidential vehicle. However, Ferrari remained motionless about ten metres from the car. The elderly President Pertini got out of the Quattroporte and walked over to the Ferrari boss.

Enzo Ferrari did not move because of the long-standing local rivalry between the Prancing Horse and Trident brands.

In the 1980s, other famous personalities also chose the Quattroporte 3rd generation as their means of transport. Perhaps the best known was Modenese tenor Luciano Pavarotti; there are famous photographs of him in his Quattroporte outside La Scala in Milan.

Today, the Quattroporte is still the President of Italy's official car: on 2 June this year, on Republic Day, the current President Sergio Mattarella used the Quattroporte 6th generation with exterior colour “Blu Istituzionale" specially created by Maserati. The car has interior trims in “Black Piano” (black lacquered wood) teamed with full-grain Pieno Fiore leather. Particular care was taken over the soundproofing of the cabin to ensure the upmost of comfort on board the car in all conditions of use. The rear of the console bears the official crest of the Italian Republic. The Quattroporte built for the Italian President was specifically modified to achieve the highest safety standards for cars intended for particular institutional uses. The powerplant is the famous 530 hp bi-turbo V8 with peak torque of 650 Nm.

Thus continues the tradition by which Maserati has supplied special cars for the President of Italy.

AND PREPARES FOR THE START OF A NEW ERA
 

Modena, 2nd December 2019 - The start of the new Maserati Era coincides with a significant birthday.

As it begins the modernisation work at the Modena plant and plans a big event for May 2020, when it will be starring on the global stage, Maserati celebrates its roots and its more than a century of history. Indeed, it was 105 years ago that Alfieri Maserati joined forces with his brothers Ettore and Ernesto to open the "Alfieri Maserati" at number 1A on via de’ Pepoli, in the heart of Bologna.

The business was founded in Bologna on 1 December 1914, but officially the activities of the mechanical workshop began trading on 14 December. The Maserati brothers were passionate about mechanical engineering and loved speed, quite happy to get behind the wheel of a racing car themselves, despite their many technical and commercial commitments. Another brother, Mario, contributed by creating the famous Trident logo (inspired by the Fountain of Neptune in the centre of Bologna) and their brother Bindo joined Officine Maserati in 1932, after Alfieri's death.

The first car to bear the Trident logo was built in 1926. It was the Tipo 26, a racing car which debuted at the Targa Florio that same year, winning first place in the class up to 1.5 L, with Alfieri Maserati at the wheel. This was the first in a long series of successes, including two consecutive editions of the Indianapolis 500 (1939 and 1940), four consecutive victories in the Targa Florio (1937, 1938, 1939 and 1940), nine F1 wins and the 1957 F1 World Championship with Juan Manuel Fangio. More recently, Maserati returned to its winning ways with the MC12, the car which, between 2005 and 2010, won six FIA GT international championships, the highest-level racing category for production-derived GT cars.

Maserati remained in Bologna until 1939. In late September 1939, following the acquisition of the Brand by the Orsi family, operations began for the transfer of the Maserati headquarters from Bologna (Pontevecchio, where it had moved in the meantime) to Modena, where the Orsi family's businesses were based, to build new cars, invest in research and innovation and become Modena's most globally famous Brand. The production site on Viale Ciro Menotti, where the plant is still located, officially opened its doors on 1 January 1940.

The year 1947 marked the end of one era and the start of a new one. The Maserati brothers’ collaboration with the company ended, while the Brand launched its first road car, the A6 1500. In 1963, Maserati started another new phase of its history: with the launch of the Quattroporte, it created a completely new, previously non-existent market segment, that of high-performance luxury sedans.

After the brief period under the ownership of Citroën (1967-1975), during which the French owners introduced the first modern industrial processes, in the following De Tomaso period (1976-1993), the Modena plant created and sold a model destined to be one of the Brand's best-known, best-selling cars: the Biturbo.

The acquisition by Fiat in 1993 was the start of a major new chapter, which led to Maserati coming under the control of Ferrari in September 1997. These were years of major transformations, which saw the birth of the 3200 GT (1998), followed by the Spyder (2001), a car which marked the important return to the US market.

In 2005, Maserati was separated from Ferrari and returned to the control of the Fiat Group. 2007 was a very successful year, with the debut at the Detroit Motor Show of the Quattroporte (5th generation) with automatic transmission, enabling an important step forward, especially in markets such as the United States, Japan and the Middle East. The same year saw the presentation at the Geneva International Motor Show of the GranTurismo, another milestone in Maserati’s history.

In 2009 it was the turn of the GranCabrio, followed by other new products that significantly renewed the range: the new Quattroporte (now in 6th generation and presented at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show), the Ghibli (Shanghai Motor Show in 2013) and the Levante (2016 Geneva International Motor Show), the first SUV for the Brand.

After over a century of history, the Modena plant is still producing extraordinary cars sold in more than 70 markets, all which stand out for their luxury, elegance, style, performance and quality. These characteristics have made Maserati a true Italian icon at the global level.

It is at the historic Viale Ciro Menotti plant itself that production of the new super sports car, rich in highly innovative technological features, is scheduled to start in 2020. Major modernisation work is already in progress on the production lines, partly to accommodate an electric version. At the same time, work has already started on a paint shop, a completely new addition to the facility.

With the strength of over a century of history Maserati is now ready to start a new Era: past and future will meet in May 2020, when the Brand will star on the world stage for the mobility of tomorrow.

MASERATI CELEBRATES THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LAUNCH OF THE 5000 GT 2+2 COUPÉ AT THE TURIN MOTOR SHOW
 

Modena, 29 November 2019 – Sixty years ago, the 5000 GT, a 2+2 coupé, was presented at the Turin Motor Show and was the undisputed star of the event. Maserati now celebrates the anniversary of this extraordinary car, built to the specific request of the Shah of Persia, Reza Pahlavi. Just 34 cars of this model were built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, with bodywork added by Italy's top coachbuilders of the period.

Reza Pahlavi, the then Shah of Persia, and a great enthusiast of high-performance sports cars, test-drove a 3500 GT towards the end of 1958 and was delighted with it. However, he requested an increase in performance, and Giulio Alfieri, Maserati technical director at the time, realised that the car would have to be completely redesigned to satisfy this prestige customer's demands.

The resulting AM103 project, continued through during 1959, and was in effect a new car and not merely a customisation: the heart of the design was the V8 engine of the 450S (the famous Maserati racing barchetta), with its bore increased to upgrade its displacement to almost five litres. The 5000 GT, a prestigious 2+2 coupé, was born.

The car, of which the first bodywork was built by Carrozzeria Touring, was launched at the 1959 Turin Motor Show, and received the nickname "Shah of Persia” in honour of this unique customer. Only three of that special version were ever produced.

The next year, in 1960, the 5000 GT was exhibited on the stand at the Geneva International Motor Show, with a few revisions to the engine. The most interesting fact of the Maserati 5000 GT was that it was built with bodywork by almost all the leading Italian coachbuilders of the time: from Allemano, Pininfarina, Monterosa, Ghia, Bertone and Frua, not to mention Michelotti for Vignale.

Its great success led to the production of a number of cars for prestige customers including Prince Karim Aga Khan (car with bodywork by Carozzeria Frua), Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli (Carozzeria Pininfarina), industrialist Ferdinando Innocenti (Carrozzeria Ghia), film star Stewart Granger (Carrozzeria Allemano) and Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos (Carrozzeria Allemano).

Maserati confirmed its ability to create a prestigous product, delivering exclusive elegance, impeccable functionality and absolute comfort, combined with thrilling performance. The 5000 GT was a VIP's car, in terms of both exclusivity and performance. Due to its extremely distinctive character and high cost, the total number of cars built was limited to just 34.

Modena, 26 November 2019 – Maserati enters into a new era of innovation and launches a process for the transfer of technological know-how from the world of cars to the world of high-performance yachts: the engineers of the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena and Giovanni Soldini, skipper of Maserati Multi 70, take centre stage. A collaboration between people moved by passion, adrenaline and the search for maximum performance, values that have been shared by Maserati and Giovanni Soldini since 2012, the year in which the collaboration began and that goes beyond sponsorship.

Today, the results of a unique study are unveiled. The research project sets out to apply the aerodynamic knowledge and virtual analysis tools usually used when developing cars to the Maserati Multi 70 trimaran, to boost its performances and aerodynamics, and to enhance its flight attributes, by means of special hydrodynamic profiles.

The Maserati engineers analysed the data of Maserati Multi 70's latest races to identify the key parameters of its motion. They made an in-depth study of the craft's current configurations to identify possible areas of improvement using advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, able to predict the behaviour of the complex flows created around the trimaran.

Virtual tools were also used to test different hull streamlining and sheet configurations, on the one hand to reduce the boat's resistance to the air and on the other to increase the efficiency of its sails by controlling extremity phenomena.

The outcome of these studies was a reduction of about 5% in the entire vessel's aerodynamic penetration (Cx) coefficient. What's more, improving the flows around the craft enables the sails to work more efficiently, increasing propulsion force by 4% with a less than 1% rise in heeling force. With these results, the yacht's cruising speed could now exceed 43 knots in ideal conditions.

The Maserati Innovation Lab is the heart of the Brand's technological research, development and design.

The Brand’s engineering hub, on via Emilia Ovest in Modena, recently opened its doors to share its key role in the development of new Maserati models with the outside world for the first time.

It is at this facility of excellence that all Maserati models of today and tomorrow are designed, with digital processes that support the product's development, applying the exclusive Maserati formula which adopts an integrated approach to prioritise the human factor right from the initial phases: customer-focus is incorporated in the world of virtual simulation with an exclusive hardware-software mix.

In fact, the Maserati Innovation Lab engineers are assisted by advanced technologies such as the new, latest-generation DiM (Driver-in-Motion) Simulator, the Static Simulator and the labs working to develop “User eXperience”.

Giovanni Soldini

Born in Milan in 1966, he started sailing when still very young. He has 25 years of ocean racing behind him, including two single-handed round-the-world, six Québec-Saint Malo, six Ostar and three Tansat Jacques Vabre races, as well as more than 40 transoceanic events. His association with Maserati began in 2012: in Vor70 Maserati he achieved many victories and major records, including Cadice-San Salvador (2012) and the New York San Francisco Gold Route (2016).

For Giovanni Soldini, 2016 saw the start of the new challenge at the helm of Maserati Multi 70, in which he set the Record for the Tea Route, from Hong Kong to London (2018), as well as winning a number of ocean races.

The “mules” - as they are known in the automotive industry - of a new Maserati model have a special wrap that echoes the “Save the Date” teaser sent out ahead of the event scheduled for May 2020.

The experimental vehicles are equipped with a new powertrain entirely developed and built in Maserati and will be the forefather of a new family of engines integrated exclusively on the vehicles of the Brand.

The data acquired through the kilometres covered by the mules will be integrated with the experience gathered in the Maserati Innovation Lab driving simulators, the most advanced in the world. This working methodology will then be used to fine-tune and develop the prototypes with final bodywork and mechanics.

A NIGHT AT THE MASERATI PLANT IN MODENA
 

Modena, 13 November 2019 - Production of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio - one of the most iconic cars of the Brand - comes to an end, and to mark the occasion Maserati opened the doors of its historic site in Viale Ciro Menotti for an exclusive night-time event. A selection of guests had the opportunity to listen to original stories and sleep alongside the production line.

At the Maserati plant they had the chance to hear a first-hand account of the past, present and future of the Brand. Ermanno Cozza, who has been with Maserati for over 60 years, told the story of the Brand and recalled fascinating episodes from his life with the company, in close contact with great champions and wonderful cars. Rossella Guasco, Colours & Materials Manager at the Centro Stile, spoke about the shapes, colours and style details of Maserati cars. And finally, engineer Federico Landini, who is in charge of developing the future high-performance sports car models, told his stories about the innovation and the future of the Brand and took guests into the realm of technological research.

Having listened to these bedtime stories, the guests then slept in special bedrooms set up for the occasion on the assembly line between the bodyshells of Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio and the special Maserati GranTurismo Zéda, the car created to celebrate the last day of production.

The Brand’s engineering hub, inaugurated in September 2015 and located on via Emilia Ovest in Modena, is for the first time sharing with the outside world its fundamental role as the Brand’s beating pulse, driving research technology, development and planning.

The Maserati Innovation Lab is a state-of-the-art facility where the cars of today and tomorrow are developed. Here, the digital processes support the product development, applying the exclusive Maserati formula which, by means of an integrated approach, prioritizes the human factor right from the initial phases. Concern with customer needs has been scrupulously incorporated into the virtual simulation process thanks to an exclusive mix of hardware and software.

The digital processes supporting product development take place in three major areas: the Static Simulator, the latest generation Dynamic Simulator featuring DiM (Driver-in-Motion) technology and the “User eXperience” development labs.

The Product Development hub (or Technical Department) employs more than 1,500 technicians (divided across the Modena offices on Via Emilia Ovest, Viale Ciro Menotti, via delle Nazioni, and in the headquarters of Grugliasco and Balocco). The headquarters in Via Emilia Ovest covers a total area of 33,744 square meters (of which 14,000 square meters are covered and 19,744 square meters uncovered). More than 1,100 people carry out their activities, the majority of which are engineers, representing 17 different countries. The environment is comprised of a very young and dynamic workforce of an average age of around 37 years. Almost half of the employees are under 35 and 20% are under 30. The organization has grown considerably in recent years, attracting top graduates from the best Italian universities, including those that collaborate with Maserati.

Static Simulator

The Static Simulator is the starting point for every experience in the Maserati realm of simulation.

The system is composed of a cockpit, three projectors and high computational power. It is a simple system that helps engineers, from the very initial phase of the development process, obtain immediate feedback from the driver, and makes a major contribution to new model validation.

In particular, Maserati engineering ensures a driver-centred strategy even during virtual development, by creating a link between the Hardware In the Loop (HiL) methodology and the simulator. Using this approach, real subsystems such as steering and braking, ABS and ESC can be added in, to create tests that connect physical and simulated components to provide a test-bed for developing all the characteristics of a new vehicle. Last but not least, driver assist systems can be developed, trialled and validated in a safe environment by reproducing the complex scenarios which may arise anywhere in the world.

Dynamic Simulator with latest generation DiM (Driver-in-Motion) technology

The Dynamic Simulator featuring latest generation DiM (Driver-in-Motion) technology, the most modern and advanced exemplar found in Europe, supports the Maserati engineers in the development of all the new models. The Dynamic Simulator incorporates state-of-the-art technology and enables full exploitation of systems' integration thanks to the evolution of proprietary control strategies, cutting development times and costs. It also helps to reduce the number of prototypes and ensures that the Virtual Sign-Off is very close to the final product.

With various directions of movement, this tool generates an effective driving experience, emulating in a virtual environment the driving dynamics of a car in the real world on a wide variety of road surfaces or contexts, including the world's top international racing circuits.

The simulator makes it possible to test cars on various racetracks on the same day. Modifications to the vehicle can be made with a few simple clicks and this greatly simplifies the analysis of the data gathered.

. The majority of simulators utilize six actuators in order to offer six “degrees of freedom”. The innovative dynamic simulator used at the Innovation Lab takes full advantage of nine actuators, thanks to which it can utilize 3 degrees of freedom with the lower platform and 6 with the upper one. In this way it can offer in total 9 degrees of freedom to accurately reproduce the driving characteristics of a car. All of this enables the engineers to precisely analyse the dynamics of the car, in addition to driving performance and comfort, all on the same moving platform.

Another particularly interesting characteristic is a very thin cushion of air which makes the entire platform float over the pavement, enabling dynamic, silent and continuous movement thanks to the electric actuators.

The Dynamic Simulator featuring latest generation DiM (Driver-in-Motion) technology offers tried and tested technology that makes it possible to achieve a 50% reduction in time-to-market for new cars, to carry out 90% of all development on the simulator and to reduce by 40% the use of physical prototypes. Using the simulator makes it possible to study and emulate the electrified vehicles included in Maserati's future plans even before physical tests become possible. Thus, the new opportunities offered by this different propulsion method can be analysed and explored in ways that keep the Maserati DNA absolutely intact. Weight distribution and the location of the centre of gravity have been effectively optimised thanks to the scope for testing hundreds of different configurations. A centralised logic that guarantees all the car's active contents and its electric traction has been developed, maximising dynamic performances since the entire car provides an integrated reaction to all inputs from the driver.

Particular care has been focused on exploiting electric motors' vast potential in terms of power and rapid response.

The “User eXperience” development labs

The “User eXperience” development labs are fundamental in the design of the human-machine interfaces, one of the major challenges of the latest Maserati development projects.

The rapid evolution of connectivity and the use of driver assist systems, combined with electrification, generate a vast number of scenarios for multisensorial interaction with the vehicle, which are often completely new and require state-of-the-art tools for managing their extreme complexity, to take full advantage of all the opportunities and deliver a unique user experience, with competitive development times and costs.

 

User Experience Lab

The Maserati driver simulator hub includes a lab dedicated to vehicle ergonomics, enabling accurate reproduction of driving posture, visibility and interactions with the on-board controls and displays, and where the vehicle under development can be driven in any scenario with the utmost realism. The integrated design of the user experience is aided by the effective, coherent visual, acoustic or haptic alerts in highly automated driving mode, from the level of distraction generated by the most frequent operations to the accessible layout of the controls, and full information in the different driving modes. The ergonomics lab is completed by a set of sophisticated, specialised instrumentation to analyse the various issues that contribute to the user experience. Two examples: the skylight simulator, designed to reproduce lighting conditions at all times of day, at any point in the year and at any latitude. Here there is an in-depth focus on reflection problems, to avoid disturbance at the wheel while still providing solutions with attractive shapes, materials, finishes and colours.

The psycho-acoustics lab where the soundtrack of future Maseratis is developed: the acoustics of the controls, the audio alerts, the driver assist systems and .... much more !

The "User eXperience” development labs support the integrated development of ergonomics, the human-machine interface and the vehicle's perceived quality for genuine "user-centred design" dedicated to delivering the distinctive Maserati user experience.

• GranTurismo Zéda is the car created to celebrate the last day of production of the Maserati GranTurismo.

The new car coincides with the Brand’s recent announcement regarding production innovations, electrification and autonomous driving, as renovation work commences at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena.

Production of the Maserati GranTurismo comes to an end and work begins in the Modena plant to update the production line

The end of production of the Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio marks the beginning of a new path for the Modena plant. Work is already under way to update the production line in view of a total renovation that will see the facility devoted to the construction of the new super sports model, a high-performance car, characterised by state-of-the art technology and scheduled to launch in 2020. In parallel, work has already started on a paint shop, a completely new addition to the facility, equipped with low environmental-impact, innovative technologies and boasting a special design enabling customers to personally view their cars as they are painted.

Maserati GranTurismo since 2007 in the Olympus of the GTs

The GranTurismo, presented at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2007, represents a milestone in the history of Maserati. This four-seat, two-door coupé, with Pininfarina’s classic design and a naturally aspirated 8-cylinder engine, came into being as a modern interpretation of the Maserati A6 1500 of 1947, and has come to be considered, over the course of time, one of the most emblematic cars ever constructed by Maserati. In 2009, where it was debuted at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, the GranCabrio joined the GranTurismo.

After various updates, the GranTurismo saw its final and last version with the MY18, in which an efficient restyling effort improved the aerodynamics, ergonomics and infotainment systems. The MY18 offered the iconic coupé in 16 exterior colours. Also available were 14 light alloy wheels in six different designs, brake callipers available in nine colours, and Exterior Carbon and Exterior Body Colour packs. With the MY18 the GranTurismo and GranCabrio range included two versions distinguished by a powerful, distinctive identity: Sport and MC (Maserati Corse). There are more than 400,000 possible combinations. The Maserati GranTurismo represents the maximum expression of the Brand’s GT character thanks to the charismatic 4.7 litre Ferrari V8 engine capable of delivering 460 hp at 7,000 rpm and 520 Nm of maximum torque at 4,750 rpm. Innumerable successes have been tallied by GranTurismo and GranCabrio in the years from 2007 to today; more than 40,000 of the iconic cars have been sold throughout the world, of which 28,805 were GranTurismo and 11,715 were GranCabrio.

MASERATI MULTI 70 AND GIOVANNI SOLDINI SET SAIL FOR THE ROYAL HONG KONG YACHT CLUB NHA TRANG RALLY
 
Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini set sail for the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Nha Trang Rally (ex Hong Kong to Vietnam Race).

The start for the multihulls was today October 16th at 3.10 pm local time.
 

Modena, October 16th, 2019 – Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini set sail today, October 16th at 15.10 local time (7.10 UTC, 9.10 Italian time) for the 9th edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race. The regatta, first run in 1996, is organized by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and is part of the China Coast Race Week. The fleet set sail from Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, and will arrive in Nha Trang, Vietnam, after sailing predominately downwind for 673 miles.

With an Easterly wind of 12-15 knots and a calm sea, Maserati Multi 70 crossed the starting line in the Hong Kong canal, in front of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, on the wake of SHK Scallywag Fuku. After the first few hours, Maserati Multi 70 should find a North-Easterly wind of 25 knots that will last for the first half of the course. After that, the wind will drop to 20-15 knots and then drop again approaching the finish line.

Nine boats entered the regatta, two of which are multihulls: Maserati Multi 70’s direct competitor is SHK Scallywag Fuku, an Orma 60 skippered by David Witt. The Hong Kong-based trimaran (former Team Australia) was added to Team Scallywag’s fleet in 2018, alongside the 100 feet maxi monohull Scallywag.

A few moments before setting sail, Giovanni Soldini commented: “It will be important for us to prevent our competitor from out-distancing us at the start in the canal, where there will be less wind.” SHK Scallywag Fuku is a 60-foot trimaran, much lighter than Maserati Multi 70, so the Hong Kong based trimaran will be very advantaged with light winds. Soldini continues: “With a strong wind and a rough sea we are surely more at ease, we will try to monitor our competitor and to avoid leaving lateral distance. Lighter boats are very strong with downwind like the one expected for this race, but I’m sure that with long waves we will be able to make a difference. Maserati Multi 70’s Team is definitely pumped and we will fight tooth and nail as always!”

The two competing trimarans will try to beat the race speed record of 1 day, 18 hours, 17 minutes and 24 seconds, set in 2015 by Sydney Fisher aboard the monohull Ragamuffin 100. The multihull record was set in 2006, when Benoit Lesaffre finished the race in 1 day, 23 hours, 40 minutes and 25 seconds aboard the catamaran Atmosphere.

. In July, Maserati Multi 70’s Team entered the shipyard in Hawaii, where they worked non-stop for two months: they repaired the damage to the left side hull and rudder, caused by an impact during the Transpacific Yacht Race, and carried out ordinary maintenance work. Furthermore, they continued researching and experimenting to optimize Maserati Multi 70’s flying performance: for the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race the T-shaped rudders are adjusted on optimal settings, developed after various tests that were carried out in the past months.

For this edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, skipper Giovanni Soldini will sail aboard Maserati Multi 70 with a seven-man crew:

• Guido Broggi (IT), shift supervisor – born in 1971, he is Maserati Multi 70’s boat captain and has thousands of miles of ocean sailing under his belt. He has been working alongside Giovanni Soldini for many years, since he was team leader in the building and in the racing preparation of 60’ Fila in 1998. He was part of Maserati Multi 70’s crew for the Tea Route record from Hong Kong to London and, in 2019, for the RORC Caribbean 600, the CA 500 and the Transpac.

• Furio Carboni (ITA), grinder – born in 1993, he grew up at sea, he has been sailing since he was young and he participated in many crewed races. He sailed aboard Maserati Multi 70 for the 6,000 miles long delivery from Honolulu to Hong Kong.

• Lorenzo Jovanotti Cherubini (ITA), grinder – born in 1966, he loves adventures and travelling by sea, he sailed aboard Maserati Multi 70 for a delivery from Italy to Spain in 2017.

• Ronan Cointo (FRA), tactician – born in 1973, he has many years of experience both in the shipyard and at sea. He participated in 5 Solitaire du Figaro, in many transatlantic crossings and in the building of many state-of-the-art IMOCAs. He was part of the building team for Giovanni Soldini’s Class 40 Telecom Italia in 2006 and, aboard Maserati Multi 70, he sailed for the delivery from Honolulu to Hong Kong.

• Oliver Herrera Perez (ESP), shift supervisor – born in 1987, throughout his career he raced aboard Ims 500s, Swan 45s and Rc44s. He was previously part of VOR 70 Maserati’s crew and now he continues to race as bowman aboard Maserati Multi 70. He crewed for Giovanni Soldini during the Tea Route record and, in 2019, for the RORC Caribbean 600, the CA 500 and the Transpac.

• Nico Malingri (ITA), grinder – born in 1991, he started sailing at a very young age and has conquered two double-handed records with his father Vittorio Malingri aboard a 20-foot-long catamaran: the Marseilles-Carthage in 2016 and the Dakar-Guadeloupe in 2017. Aboard Maserati Multi 70 he participated in the latest editions of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the RORC Transatlantic Race, the RORC Caribbean 600 and the CA 500.

• Matteo Soldini (ITA), trimmer and grinder – born in 1993, he has been part of the Maserati Multi 70 project since its start and has participated in many offshore races. He was part of the trimaran’s crew for the latest Rolex Middle Sea Race, RORC Transatlantic Race, RORC Caribbean 600, CA 500 and Transpac.

The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Nha Trang Rally is the last regatta of Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini’s 2019 racing season. This past year the Italian Team has participated in the RORC Caribbean 600 in February, the CA 500 in May and the Transpacific Yacht Race in July.

MASERATI TIPO V4 AND MARIO UMBERTO “BACONÌN” BORZACCHINI’S CREMONA RECORD
 

Modena, 30 September 2019 – On 28 September 1929, Mario Umberto “Baconìn” Borzacchini, at the wheel of a Maserati Tipo V4, set the world land speed record for the flying 10 kilometres. The car had made its race debut on 15 September, driven by Alfieri Maserati in the Monza Grand Prix, finishing the race in sixth place. Two weeks later, before the race at the Circuito di Cremona, the “Giornata dei record”, a time trial on the flying 10 kilometres, was organised. The race was held on the old state (now provincial) highway no. 10-Padania Inferiore, which runs in a straight line East-North-East out of the city of Cremona for approximately 17 km. The 10 km course started from the town hall at Gadesco Pieve Delmona and finished at Sant’Antonio d’Anniata, a village near Pessina Cremonese, with a 3 km margin for the flying start and for stopping.

The international rules required the course to be completed twice, once in each direction. The average of the times logged was approved for the purposes of the record. Borzacchini covered the uphill leg in 2’25”20/100, with an average speed of 247.933 km/h. On the downhill leg he took two more seconds, logging 2’27”40/100, giving an average of 244.233 km/h. His overall average time was 2’26”30/100, equivalent to a speed of 246.069 km/h: world record for class C (from 3,000 to 5,000 cc). This was an extraordinary achievement by Mario “Baconìn” Borzacchini, breaking the previous recorded, set by Ernest Eldridge at Montlhéry in 1927 with 225.776 km/h and a time of 2’39”45/100.

The record was an outstanding achievement, celebrated in Bologna with a dinner hosted by the Automobile Club attended by the city's top officials, the drivers and Enzo Ferrari, who took advantage of this opportunity to persuade the two wealthy Emilia-region businessmen Alfredo Caniato and Mario Tadini to establish the racing team which was to bear his name.

The Maserati Tipo V4 marked a major milestone for Maserati in terms of innovation. The aim was to produce a mighty powerplant by combining two identical straight eight engines. This complex design comprised two Tipo 26B engines mounted side by side, connected by a single crankcase containing two crankshafts. The name Maserati Tipo V4 referred to the V layout of the rows of cylinders, placed at a 25° angle, and the displacement of 4 litres. Each of the two sets of cylinders had its own magneto ignition, its own carburettor with supercharger and its own crankshaft, giving a power output of over 280 HP.

The chassis was specially reinforced to cope with the massive power of the engine. It consisted of the usual C-section pressed steel section rails; the car had a 4-speed gearbox with a single propeller shaft ending at the rigid rear axle with semi-elliptical spring suspension. It proved impossible to eliminate the rapid tyre wear and the inadequacy of the braking system, problems generated by the car's immense power and considerable weight.

Modena, 26 September 2019 – In line with FCA’s €5 billion investment program for Italy, Maserati announces its innovation plan for production, electrification and autonomous driving technologies.

 

Maserati announces plans for all-new models to be developed, electrified and produced in Italy.
 

With regards to production, Maserati announces plans for its lineup of new and electrified products at Modena, Cassino and Turin (Mirafiori and Grugliasco).

All of Maserati’s new models will be 100 percent made in Italy and will adopt hybrid and battery electric propulsion systems capable of providing both innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA. Maserati’s all electric models will combine traditional highly appreciated Maserati driving dynamics together with next-generation battery electric technology, offering unique driving modes, extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities.

An important step for Maserati innovation is the level of Autonomous Driving. All new Maserati including the updated current models, will offer a range of autonomous driving capabilities, starting with Maserati Level 2 enhanced Highway Assist progressing to Level 3 with hands-off offering close to full autonomy, having the ability to manoeuvre in and out of lanes or bring the vehicle to a safe stop at the side of the road if the driver is unable to take control of the vehicle.

In 2020, the Company will embark on electrification and the Maserati Ghibli, produced in Turin, will be the first hybrid electric propulsion for the brand. The first of the totally new Maserati to appear will be the eagerly anticipated sports car – packed with technology and reminiscent of Maserati’s traditional values. It will be produced in the Modena plant, where major production line upgrades are also underway to accommodate its electric powertrain.

Next up will be a new Maserati utility vehicle, set to be built at Cassino and destined to play a leading role for the Brand thanks to its innovative technologies. An investment of approximately €800 million has been earmarked for the construction of the new production line, scheduled to open at the end of the first quarter of 2020. The first pre-series cars are expected to roll off the line by 2021.

After many years of success, GranTurismo and GranCabrio remain part of the Brand's roots and these models will herald the full electrification era for Maserati. The totally New GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be produced at the Turin production hub, where FCA is investing €800 million.

Production of the new models will complement that of the prestigious and continuously improving line-up of current Maserati range: Levante, Quattroporte and Ghibli.

With the introduction of various product innovations, Maserati is reinforcing the importance of Italy with regards to its production — particularly Modena, which will also continue to play a strategic role as the Brand’s headquarters.

Construction has already begun in Modena on a paint shop, a new feature for the plant, which will be equipped with innovative, low environmental-impact technologies. The design of the paint shop will also allow Maserati customers to watch their car being painted.

Finally, Maserati is developing an entirely new customization program for customers seeking a one-of-a- kind level of exclusivity. A dedicated customization workshop will be created within the Modena plant.

The 2019-2021 FCA investment plan for Italy, announced on 29th November in Turin, includes thirteen totally new or significantly updated FCA models and electrified versions of 12 new or existing models, including the Maserati products, the recently announced all-new electric version of the Fiat 500 to be produced at Mirafiori, and a new premium vehicle for Alfa Romeo to be produced at Pomigliano.
