I don't profess to be an expert or a top collector and my collection is made up of mainly affordable mass-produced models most of which cost me no more than £25. So it was with a certain amount of caution that I parted with the princely sum of US$250 for one of the latest limited issue model, produced by Southern Cross Miniatures, of the Tipo 61 Birdcage 'Streamliner'. This is a spectacular factory built Maserati Tipo 61 "Birdcage" LeMans 1960. This handbuilt masterpiece is made by Southern Cross Miniatures of Australia. Southern Cross limits these factory builts to only 100 pieces and this is #52/100. The photoetched frame and birdcage are simply gorgeous, pictures do not do it justice. Model comes mint in box and personally numbered and signed by the master builder, Roi Hakim on the base and box. I have to say the money was well spent. The quality and detail of this model is unbelievable and one thing I've learnt as the owner of a Maserati is that quality never comes cheap! I now know that the building of the kit version of this particular model is about to be far more challenging than I thought.

BUILD UPDATE: Well the big day came and I'm embarrassed to admit went. I got as far as opening the box and laying out the pieces, took one look at the size of the detailed chassis and another look at the size of my hands, common sense prevailed and I turned the task over to a nice chap down in Corwall.

Rodney Rawlings is a keen model maker who has made models since he was a lad, so as you can imagine, he's pretty good at it by now. I have found his work to be very reasonably priced. He returned my kit beautifully assembled. His secret is that he enjoys his work and when I inspected the model closely I noticed that he had even added the tiny fasteners for the tonneau cover, a detail that isn't shown on the kit plans.

This German hand-made 1/87th scale model is a beautiful piece of art. The attention to the smallest detail is unimaginable, yes the chassis illustrated really does fit inside the model. Each and every one of the 61 metal parts is hand finished. Made of white metal by the German company "High Tech Modell", this model is also available in kit form but should only be attempted by an expert.

This model was displayed at the recent 'Modellismo Maserati' exhibition.
