"... an insight into the art of Maserati restoration."

I am indebted to Olaf Boecking for his co-operation and photographic contribution to this page.

It all started back in early February, when I received an email from Olaf Boecking informing me that there was a glaring ommission from my CLASSIC section, namely the 3500 Spyder Vingale.

He was of course absolutely correct! I replied stating that I would address this omission as soon as possible. I also added that any detailed photographs that he could provide to enhance the page would be most welcome.

You will have seen from my recent page on the Spyder Vignale that that ommission has now been addressed, and you will also have noticed that it would not have been possible without the assistance of Olaf.

Whilst sifting through the Olaf's photographs, I couldn't help noticing the condition of some of the Maseratis that arrive at his workshop. It was then that I decided it would be a good idea to enlighten myself, and other Maserati enthusiasts, with the type of work carried out by Maserati specialists like Olaf Boecking. I thought it would make a very entertaining and informative addition to my site. You see, I own a humble 1995 Ghibli II, and for the immediate future do not foresee my Maserati needing the kind of transformation that craftsmen like Olaf can perform.

So I emailed Olaf once again asking for a brief history of his workshop and some restoration images (including a brief description of the work being carried out) that I could use?

And here is Olaf's reply:

"I will try to explain why we decided to specialise in Maserati restorations and not Ferrari or any other marques.

All of my colleagues, myself included, in this workshop are craftsmen, having gained a wealth of experience in the restoration of high quality cars in various sectors of the motor industry. One of our team worked on restorations and paint work for a long time in Italy before meeting his German wife. Another learned his panel beating skills with Mercedes Benz and later for a long time worked with Alfa Romeo. Another is specialised in all electrical work and precision engineering. As for me, I have experience mostly in bodywork but also mechanics, and two years ago started the 'Master of Panel Beater' in Germany.

Here at Lake Constance, bodywork and mechanics are our emphases, but we also carry out routine servicing. We have specialists working both for us and with us.....not just in reproducing spare parts. The reason for this is, that there are always people and companies that are specialised in doing certain work much better and more effectively than we could. Another reason is that it is not always easy to find the right employees for this kind of work and there's always the question of space in our workshop.

For example - our gearboxes and steering assemblies are overhauled at ZF Friedrichshafen with whom we have very good relationship; ZF is only 20 minutes away from us. Our engines are overhauled by "Ital Auto" in Köngen near Stuttgart. They are specialists in Alfa Romeo racing and engineering and have recently bought a brand new engine test bench (dynometer) for approaching some EURO 50,000. All our engines come fully tested with a three year guarantee, without mileage limitation and a performance improvement of 15% to 20% (this is not something we set out to do - it is simply a by-product of the engine rebuild).

The trimmer/upholsterer is an alumnus employee from Maserati in Modena. Paint jobs are carried out in Switzerland. Chrome plating is done in Germany, as is the powder coating and sandblasting.

Before I began restoring Maseratis I kept track of what was going on in the market - who does restoration work or servicing - and believe me.......I couldn't find any professional Maserati restorer in Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands or even Germany. I had heard of Bill McGrath Maserati in the UK, and of Giuseppe Candini or Carrozzeria Campana in Italy, and that was all. So four years ago we started specialising solely in Maserati and reproducing Maserati parts with our partners. At the moment in our workshop we have 18 Maseratis undergoing a full restoration, and it is getting more and more. And today I know why there is no one else in Germany performing this work.......sometimes it is particulary frustrating regarding the spare parts situation, or the quality of reproduced parts. You can only carry out a perfect restoration job with perfect parts.

When you take a look at our homepage and the work we undertake - you will observe that we always try to do the best we can and our aim is to set new standards in Maserati restoration work. Another reason is of course, that we love our work and want to preserve as many of these fantastic machines as possible.

Regards,

Olaf Boecking."
