The Maserati Shamal - Year: 1990 to 1996 *( Text and photo courtesy of Maserati* )**

Named after a warm wind in the Mesopotamian desert, the Shamal marked a radical evolution in the Biturbo family tree. Styled by Marcello Gandini – designer of the Khamsin and Quattroporte II in his Bertone days -, it was a proper 2+2 coupé with a very aggressive stance. It used a modified Biturbo shell with new body panels and a completely new rear section. The wheelbase was the same as the Karif’s, but the cabin allowed more room for rear passengers. Meant as an all-out performance GT, the Shamal inaugurated the new generation of V8s which would subsequently power the Quattroporte IV and 3200 GT. The new unit boasted 4 DOH camshafts 4-valve-heads and the usual twin-turbo, twin intercooler set-up, good for a staggering 326 bhp and 436 Nm of torque from 3.2 litres. The Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox was the first one mounted in a production Maserati, and indeed an advanced feature for the time. Clad in 245-wide Michelin MXX (225 at the front) with a wider track, the car has redesigned rear suspensions and an electronic adaptive damping system all around. The top claimed speed was 270 kph (169 mph) on the later versions. The fact that Maserati managed to sell 369 units of this powerful beast was certainly no mean achievement.

IDENTIFYING THE YEAR OF MANUFACTURE

Lift your bonnet and you will see a chassis plate on the bonnet slam panel. The longest sequence of digits is the actual VIN/chassis number and on my Ghibli M.Y.94, it reads:

* ZAM 336 B00 * 00 361051 *

The first series of digits ZAM is the new version of the old AM which meant ALFIERI MASERATI. All road vehicles manufactured since 1977 possess a unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN comprises 17 characters: the first 3 denote the World Manufacturers Identifier (WMI) i.e. the company which built the vehicle, and the remaining characters are specific to each vehicle manufactured (make, model, year and place of manufacture etc.).

In Italy the code starts with the letter Z:

WMI

ZAM

Manufacturer

Maserati

The second series of digits denotes model type as follows:

339	Shamal

The B00 stands for BITURBO and is also common to all types for obvious reasons. The next digit, either N, P or R shows the year of manufacture, in my particular case it's a 0 for 1995:

L	1990
M	1991
N	1992
P	1993
R	1994
0	1995-96

The next letter A or B shows the place of manufacture:

A	Made in Modena
B	Made in Milan

After 1994, Maserati labelled all Shamals '00', so there is no way of determining the exact year of manufacture during the final days of production.

The next two numbers identify left or right-hand drive:

36 Left-hand drive

40 Right-hand drive

The final four numbers are simply the car's production number.
