The 1994 MASERATI-OPAC Spider
"At the Salone dell'Automobile di Torino in 1992, presented for display to a surprised audience was the Maserati OPAC Spider on basis of the standard Spyder, but with the engine of the Maserati Shamal. Its creator was the company, which manufactured, among other things, the chassis of the series Maserati Spyder. The design with its flat nose and folding headlights made the series Maserati Spyder look a little dated, which is why Alejandro De Tomaso, the Maserati boss at that time, tried everything to prevent its presentation.
During its first presentation the Spider was fitted with the tail light cluster from the AUDI 80. A year later, when the OPAC Spider was introduced at the 1993 Turin show, it was fitted with tail lights from a Ferrari.
Despite being well received by the press and public alike, it was never placed into mass production."
This is a one-off prototype first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1992 by Maserati, and again in 1994 by OPAC.
Official name is the Spider Maserati Convertible.
The car is totally hand-built, and based on the structural and mechanical base of the Maserati Spyder, but using the very pouwerful 3.2-litre V8 engine of the Maserati Shamal.
I bought the Spyder in 2003 from Autospeak in Italy with about 11,000 km on the odometer.
The car is in excellent condition, having only been driven in fine weather, and comes colmplete with hard and soft tops.
In 2005, it has been treated with Dinitrol anti-rust protection by a well know specialist in 2005, and is fitted witht the 17-inch Ghibli GT rims for a better drive. The original 16-inch rims and good tyres are supplied with the car.
Among its special features is the Ranger differential with forced pump oil cooling with external heat exchanger.
The car has been serviced annually by a Maserati specialist in Holland, and the odometer is presently reading around 50,000 km.
A perfect driving car with exceptional "fun factor", the combination of its powerful engine and beautiful original lines.
Asking price is EURO 98,000.
