This early, and extremely rare right-hand-drive Maserati Mistral Spyder came to the United Kingdom as the 1965 London Show Car. It surfaced in the United States around 1980 when it was purchased by a collector from Missouri, who held it until 2007. In 2008 it was offered at auction by Bonhams & Butterfields, This pre-production run Mistral has the 3500 engine instead of the common 3700 or the much later 4000. It also has a rather unique dash and interior - not found on later models.
The restoration was body-off; she was stripped and refinished. The fuel injected 3.5L straight-six, dual-spark, 235 bhp engine was completely rebuilt; as were the transmission, suspension, and all other mechanical aspects using the correct Maserati parts. The interior and dashboard were fully restored; right down to the Wilton wool carpeting. New, correct tires were installed on the original Borrani wire wheels, which were sent to their manufacturer for restoration. Other reciepts also document a major service and detailing by a Maserati-Ferrari specialist, prior to a showing at a Bonham's & Butterfield's auction in 2008. It now shows just over 34,100 original miles; the records indicate the majority of these miles were earned prior to the rebuild.
The Spyder, on entering our collection in 2008, was examined in detail by our own in-house specialists. We found that the restoration was very thorough - and is accurately documented with photographs, letters, and receipts from the then-owner to the different specialists involved in the restoration. The total body-off restoration cost over $100,000 in the late 1980s - it would cost nearly twice as much to restore one to this condition today. After restoration the car was shown at Paris, Texas. All records, and our inspection confirm that this is a proper and correct car; restored to factory specifications.
Contrary to the fearful short-sighted opinions circulating these days, rare classics in this condition are indeed sound investments. It is a option proving to be popular now that many people are looking for something more reliable than the financial products available today. Better still, you can drive it. You can appreciate the craftsmanship and work that went into creating this work of rolling art; and feel confident that you have acquired something special that will never be built again. Think long term - look for quality.
The rarity of this specific model and it's documented provenance make it a highly desirable by collectors. Only 120 were produced in total; and just 19 of those were RHD - this may be the earliest. Prices have held firm on these cars, and have sold for over $225,000 in Europe. More photos or specific photos are available on request. The car is located here in Canada, but maintains its US title.
This highly desirable model is offered at US $225,000 (around GB £150,000). |
