GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
This is one of the five right hand drive SS Ghibli Spyders ever made and a letter from Maserati confirms that this Ghibli chassis #1229 - a right-hand drive 4.9 SS finished in Giallo - was manufactured in September 1970 for the Earls Court Motor Show.
Following display on the Maserati stand, the car sporting Borrani wire wheels, was registered by importers MTC Cars on the 1st February 1971 and supplied shortly after to its first owner Dr Collins for whom power-steering was added by the factory in 1971 or '72, and a change in colour to silver was made.
Subsequent owners have been J.J. Baynes of West Byfleet and M.D. Schimmel of London 1975-1983, by which time the mileage had risen to 25,000. During Mr Schimmels' ownership the car was extensively restored in the workshops of Bill McGrath; seven pages of notes and a four page invoice detail the work carried out between March 1980 and May 1982.
The next owner, Maserati Club Secretary Michael Miles, also compiled a detailed record of work carried out 1983-1996.
During the present ownership since 1996, the engine heads have been overhauled and the colour put back to the original Giallo. The seat covers have recently been restored to this waspish alternative and the mileage, the total from new has risen to just over 76,000.
The current registration is "GIB 4929", previous UK registrations have included YLL 8, 5000 MM and 405 MM. An extensive history file comes complete with letters from the factory and past owners, service and restoration details, past MOT certificates and even tax discs! As a pre-1973 car this Maserati will run in the UK at zero rated road tax. |
