From Dardo in Argentina

"Hola:

Soy de Argentina y desearia saber si alguien sabe decirme a que pertenece este escudo.

Gracias.

Dardo.
"

"Hello:

I am Argentinian and want to know if somebody can tell me to what these badges belong to.

Thanks.

Dardo."

"Ciao Enrico,

Ciao

Daniele."

"Hi Enrico,

In answer to Dardo from the Argentine: the badges that you have photographed come Maserati machine tools.

In fact, Maserati as well as producing automobiles, were also the manufacturer of precision machine tools, in particular milling machines.

Maserati milling machines, produced from 1930 until the Seventies were of a particular high-quality, to the point that even the workshops at Ferrari (a rival of Maserati) were equipped of some Maserati milling machines. Even Ducati had some.

The first machine tools constructed had an enameled badge, a lot cured, subsequently they were fitted with metal printed badges, like those in the photos.

One of the reasons that Maserati reached a very critical economic situation in the late Fifties was not only because of its great commitment to motor racing. Indeed, one of the decisive factors was when, with the support of the then Argentinian governor Peron, Maserati won a substantially important order for machine tools for Argentina. With the order supplied and delivered, a change in the political climate in Argentina meant that the order was never paid for, if not in small part. This loss put Maserati in such serious financial difficulty that it had to reorganise its budgets of expenditure for its development and participation in motor racing (that in fact was immediately interrupted following its victory in the World Championship of 1957).

I am sending you some photos of a milling machine of mine, that I acquired some years ago from a machine tool wholesaler in Modena. This machine tool came from the Ferrari workshops, and it had a rivetted metallic nameplate with the the factory's inventory reference number, but it had already been removed before I acquired the machine tool (someone helped themselves to a souvenir...).

This milling machine still works perfectly and weighs approximately 3500 kg.

Ciao,

Daniele."

"Salve,

Saluti

Max."

"Hi,

We are the owners of a car which is a sole example, a FIAT 1600 S OSCA Maserati, bodied by "Savio" ...

The car was introduced at the Salone di Torino in 1961, and never put into production as it was deemed too futuristic at that time ...

There are rumours they were produced in very few examples, including a Cabriolet personally produced for the son of Savio, that was destroyed in an accident.... and this Coupé is perhaps the only surviving model ....

Originally painted in pale blue FIAT and then changed to red ...

I have attached a photo of this extraordinary and perhaps unique car ...

Regards,

Max."

"Hello,

At the back of the instrument binnacle, there are 3 single-pole terminals. In the image below they are numbered 1, 2 and 3.

Could anyone please tell me which is the correct wire to connect to each of these 3 terminals ?

I have found 4 wires - one red - one orange - one grey and one grey/black.

My Ghibli is of March 1998.

Thank you,

Didier."

1992 Maserati 430 Saloon

Chassis no. ZAM332B28AK*LB290379*
Engine no. AM473552514

First introduced in 1987, the ‘430’ was one of the final developments of the Maserati Biturbo. Maserati’s mainstream model throughout the 1980s and the first series-production road car to employ a twin turbo-charged engine, the Biturbo was intended to challenge BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the luxury sporting saloon market. Initially a two-door saloon powered by a 2.0-litre, three-valves-per-cylinder V6, the Biturbo gained 2.5-litre, 2.8-litre and four-valve engines as the model range expanded throughout the 1980s to include four-door saloon and spyder variants. Numerous cosmetic changes differentiated the 2.8-litre ‘430’ from the preceding ‘420/425’ models, while beneath the skin there was new front suspension and steering plus a further refinement of the Sensitork transmission in the form a Ranger differential.

This rare, right-hand drive ‘430’ has the four-speed automatic transmission and comes with its original bill of sale and Meridian Maserati number plates. As one would expect of a car of this class it is exceptionally well equipped, boasting climate control air conditioning, central locking, front fog lights, and electrically adjustable front seats and door mirrors. The car has covered only 51,000-or-so miles from new and in the past few months has benefited from £2,000 spent on a full service, using genuine Maserati parts, which included a change of cam belts, spark plugs, all fluids and filters, four new tyres and new front window motors. Finished in silver with grey leather/Alcantara interior, the car is presented in unusually good condition for this model and offered with sundry service invoices, SORN, MoT to May 2009 and Swansea V5. Body coloured sill covers (previously black) are the only notified deviation from factory specification.

1972 Maserati Ghibli SS 4.9-Litre Coupé

Coachwork by Carrozzeria Ghia
Chassis no. AM115/49*2472*
Engine no. AM114/49*2472*

A strong contender for the ‘most handsome car of the 1960s’ title, Maserati’s Ghibli debuted in coupé form at the Turin Motor Show in November 1966. Styled at Carrozzeria Ghia by Giorgetto Giugiaro and named after a Sahara Desert wind, the Ghibli rivalled the Ferrari Daytona for straight-line performance - its top speed was close to 170mph (275km/h) - while beating it for price and, arguably, looks. More than 4.5m long and 1.8m wide, the Ghibli occupied an inordinate amount of space for a mere two-seater, but perhaps the most startling aspect of its appearance was the height, or rather the lack of it. Dry-sump lubrication enabled the engine to be mounted deep in the chassis, permitting a low bonnet line, while limited suspension travel ensured that the tyres did not foul the wheelarches. The roofline fell away from the top of the steeply raked windscreen to the chopped-off tail, Giugario thus achieving a cabin lower than that of almost all the Ghibli’s contemporaries, albeit one with restricted headroom for rear passengers.

Like the contemporary Mexico 2+2, the Ghibli used a shortened version of the Quattroporte saloon’s tubular steel chassis in its live rear axle form. Perhaps surprisingly, the Ghibli set-up used leaf springs and a single locating arm in preference to the more complex suspension arrangements favoured by its rivals. The power unit was Maserati’s venerable, four-cam, 90-degree V8, an engine derived from that of the 450S sports racer and first seen in road-going guise in the 5000GT. This was used in 4.7-litre form up to 1970 when it was superseded by the 4.9-litre ‘SS’ version in order to meet ever more stringent emission laws. The gain in horsepower was minimal but in either case performance was stunning, with 100mph (160km/h) attainable in under 16 seconds. This neck-snapping acceleration resulted from the V8’s enormous torque, which made the Ghibli one of the most flexible and easy-to-drive GTs of its era. Ghibli production ceased in 1973 after approximately 1,149 coupé and 125 spyder models had been built.

Supplied new in the UK, this rare right-hand drive Ghibli Coupé represents the model in its ultimate form, with effortless 4.9-litre 335bhp ‘SS’ engine, ZF five-speed manual gearbox and air conditioning, plus the desirable option of power assisted steering. ‘HGF 444K’ is a well-known example, having featured in the Maserati Club’s Trident journal and also in Classic Cars magazine. It has also been seen at many club events over the years.

A comprehensive history accompanies the car, including a large number of invoices from specialists and correspondence between various owners, one of which was Adam Clayton of ‘U2’ fame. The body was restored in the early 1990s and the interior re-trimmed at the same time in the original colours of Rosso Fuoco paintwork and black Connolly leather. Since then the car has been looked after by marque specialists including Bill McGrath Maserati, which thoroughly serviced it last year. Offered with sundry restoration invoices, 12 months road tax, MoT to March 2010 and Swansea V5 registration document, ‘HGF 444K’ has covered around 1,000 trouble-free miles since that last service, while the total mileage from new is now circa 34,000.

One of the most stunning looking motor cars ever made, the Ghibli was a worthy rival for the Ferrari ‘Daytona’ and represents exceptional value for money today, just as it did 40 years ago.

From the Superstars Series 2009

Swiss Team brings the Maserati Quattroporte
to its debut in Superstars Series with Andrea Chiesa

The Maserati Quattroporte GT S of the Swiss Team

A prestige new entry joins the list of Superstars Series 2009 championship contestants. It is the Swiss Team, ready to bring to its outright debut the Maserati Quattroporte, entrusting it to a very skilful driver, with a noteworthy past in F1 and in Sport and GT categories, whose name is Andrea Chiesa who, except for a few fleeting appearances, for the fist time in his career will be at the wheel of a Touring car.

A challenge entirely original for the team set up at the end of 2008 but with a twenty-year background in car competitions, which aims to line up also a second car already during this season (the other driver will be designed in a short time), fielding men of proven experience. Among them the chief mechanic, Giovanni Albertin, rally cars fitter since the first half of the seventies, thence involved with several key roles in Ferrari Challenge and in GT Series both in Italy and abroad.

That of the Trident is also a new brand in the championship for V8 Touring cars only and for this reason the Swiss Team commitment constitutes for sure, to all intents and purposes, a reason of special interest in the context of a varied and fierce competition.

“Ours is a triennial program, mainly supported by E-Light sponsor.", explained Giovanni Albertin. "The choice to take part in Superstars Series championship originates also from the fact that in this category the public is directly involved, because it is induced to identify its own every day car with those on track. The idea, after first races, is to line up a second car too. We favoured the Quattroporte pushed by Maserati blazon, also if we will have to work at once on weight distribution and reduction. Sadev is developing expressly for us a sequential gearbox and we expect to carry out first tests at the beginning of April.”

Andrea Chiesa, born in 1964, competed in three F.1 Grand Prix with Fondmetal-Ford in 1992, but claims also a glorious past in F.3 (in which he distinguished himself in 1987 becoming Italian vice-champion) and in F. 3000 in which raced for three years winning the Mediterranean Grand Prix on Pergusa track in 1989. After leaving single-seater, more recently he was crowned N-GT Italian champion in 2004-2005 biennium and took also part in several editions of Le Mans 24 Hours. Superstars has grown year by year thus becoming, in my view, a valid alternative to GT – stated the experienced driver – both for a factor related to more affordable costs and for the appeal resulting from the presence of many models in addition to an attractive international openness and media coverage. For 2009 I can only say that, with the exception of the circuits, we will have to discover time by time almost everything. I haven’t seen the car yet and both I and the team will be able to have an idea of the available car potential only when we will bring it on track. The objective is to reach a good level of competitiveness and reliability which for sure are not missing to the others, being present in the championship since long time. The occurrence of driving again a rear drive car encourages myself because I’m convinced that the kind of driving won’t be so different from that of GTs I had in my hands in the last years, besides of course the dimensions, the weight and the aerodynamic load. Further on, speaking about the team, I already knew the people working on this project and their soundness. All this will allow me to face my coming commitment with more tranquillity.

The Maserati Quattroporte in a rear drive car with a front V8, 4.200 cc engine able to develop about 450 HP in its racing version. The weight, without the handicap due the use of a sequential gearbox (a Sadev placed in the car rear) is 1.430 kg. Tyres are Pirelli, according to regulations, while the bodywork, for an explicit choice, mirrors almost totally that of the road version with a few small aerodynamic changes. At Swiss Team home are already working at full tilt on first Maserati Quattroporte assembly. The rendezvous is in a little more than one month, when the team will carry out the first test sessions in view of Imola first round on April 19.
