"Dear Enrico,

Many thanks for hosting this excellent site.

I have a 3200GTA and despite lots of TLC and expenditure, I came across many of the problems of the other owners during the 30000 miles I did with the car.

The latest glitch is that the brake lights do not light up. When I press the brake pedal, the red ‘light bulb problem light’ comes on on the dashboard. I checked the fuse no1 and it is ok, so I was told it may be the brake switch?

Does anybody know were it is and how to replace it?

Many thanks,

Mario."

"Hi,

I have a 2001 Maserati 3000GT Auto. When I accelerate in the car it makes a loud whistle type noise with increases in volume as the revs rise. The strange thing is it cannot be heard when the car is stationary. It can only be heard when the car is actually moving.

Any ideas what I can be? If sounds like it is coming from the pedal area.

Best Regards,

Neil."

The Kaiser valve has failed, allowing boost pressure to fill the brake servo and then blowing past the seal in to the car. The valve is a three way valve behind the inlet manifold on the left hand side.

Part number 377493347.

RE: 3200GT makes a noise and shudders:

"Dear Sir,

I just checked your web site and found it is the most useful and helpful to all Maserati user.

I just bought used 3200GT early this year. Recently I have got the 'Check Engine' shown and loss of power. I even took the car to the dealer to check the cause. They told me they cleaned some of the parts and it works well for couple of months. But now again the same problem. I am located in Thailand and we also have a dealer in our location but still the problem was not solved.

Another problem is I have noise coming from the from wheel and also had some parts changed and then it could last for only 2 weeks and then again same problem.

I am sorry because I could not explain the name of the parts to you correctly but hope you could help me to find some solution to these problems.

Thanks,

Montri."

"Hi Enrico!

Thank you for your help. One of my friends has a 3200 GT with automatic transmission. When his car runs at 205 Km/h (4,700rpm), it makes a noise and it trembles.

At the lower speeds hasn't got any problem. The engineer has changed the drive shafts and the arms with new, but the car is still having the same problem. The car makes also the same thing without wheels above in slover loader.

The engineers said that first time they meet this problem.

Can you give me a piece of advice?

Regards John."

Reply from Andrea:

"Hi John,

Sorry, no experience of that. Have they checked the propshaft and torque tube balance?

Best Regards,

Andrea."

Reply from Myles:

"Hi Enrico,

My first thought for this type of vibration would be the output flange from the auto box is loose,

Any sign of a gearbox leak from the seal would confirm this. Remove the propshaft by shifting the engine forward and check the nut, replace the nut, apply Locktite and torque to 110nm.

Propshaft balancing may be required if the output flange is OK.

Regards,

Myles."

Reply from Michael:

"Enrico,

No solution I'm afraid but I have the same "problem" with my QPIV V8 Evo with (BTR) automatic gearbox.

To me an offical Maserati Service point confirmed this is a known problem with the auto equipped 3200GT's and QP IV (not specific to BTR by the way, all automatics). It seems to be somewhere in the driveshaft. However not fixable according to them.

A Maserati specialist however told me that changing the rubbers/bearings on the cross links on the drive shaft has solved the problem on a couple of cars, but not always.

Regards,

Michael."

RE: 3200GT is it EOBD compliant?:

"Hi,

First off I would like to compliment you on this great site.

I have a 1999 3200 GTA (Euro version). Do you know if this car is EOBD compliant, or if there is any diagnostic tool that I can buy for my car?

Sincerely,

Stig."

Reply from Myles:

"Hi Stig,

A 1999 3200 would be OBD1 compliant. The diagnostic plug is grey in colour and is behind the throttle pedal. As for a scan tool I have heard of the snap on scanner plugging in and giving basic error codes but to do this you have to find another manufacturer using the same Magneti Marelli engine management as Maserati is never listed.

Best Regards,

Myles."

RE: 3200GT broken exhaust heat sensor replacement:

"Enrico,

Due to an unfortunate incident(!), my exhaust heat sensors, (just after the Cat - I think they warn you when you're driving to hard and are about to melt down the catayltic convertors), were snapped off. These are connected using steel braid wire and cannot be soldered so I needed to trace the wires to the connectors in the car. Tracing them took me around 3 hours but with these instructions, it should take around 30 minutes:

First remove the central transmission cover (where the handbrake is):

1: Remove rear ash tray.

2: Undo cross head screw that fixes ash tray support in place.

3: Gently twist and pull the two rear air vents above the ash tray to remove them.

4: Undo the two alan key screws fixing the cover in place.

5: Remove the front ashtray.

6: Remove the cross head screw holding the ash tray support.

7: Unscrew the alan key screw (around 2mm) holding the black handbrake handle cover in place and twist to remove. The screw is in the stitching underneath.

8: Pull the hand brake all the way on.

9: The cover should lift off the central transmission tunnel.

10: Un connect the cables from the black box from below where the rear ashtray is.

11: Cut the cable ties holding the wires in place. (easy to spot as the wires are steel braded).

Next remove the sensors from the exhaust:

1: Jack up and safely secure the car with axle stands.

2: Gently pull the cables through from inside the car (they enter the car just in front of the gear stick/auto select).

3: Gently Unscrew the sensors from the exhaust.

- Finally installation is the reverse of removal.

Job done. - Go and have a beer.

Steve."

RE: 3200GT voltmeter's faulty reading:

"Hi,

Hope you can help with the following problem. The Voltmeter seems to be reading 2 Volts lower than the actual voltage at the battery. With the starter switch in the MAR position the Voltmeter reads 10.5 Volts but the voltage at the battery is 12.5 Volts, with the engine running the Voltmeter reads 12.5 volts but the voltage at the battery is 14.5 volts. I have checked the voltage at a couple of other points i.e. Radio, Fuse box in the boot, these all where at 12.5v with the starter switch in the MAR position and the engine not started. I am not sure if the voltmeter is just at fault and reading 2 volts lower or if there is a bad connection causing the 2 volt drop.

Do you have a wiring diagram showing the voltmeter so that I can check the voltage at the voltmeter before I start trying to find a faulty connection. The reason I want to investigate this is because I keep getting random Engine Check warning light which occurs when setting the starter to the MAR position before staring the engine or when the engine is at idle. I have had a Maserati Dealer check this and it showed up as the right hand Lamda sensor and I had both Lamda sensors replaced.

I am wondering if there is a 2 volt drop to the Engine Management Unit this may be the cause of the problem. Hope you can.

Thanks in advance,

Allen."

I understand that several changes were made to 3200 GT to improve the steering, brakes and acceleration problems.

My question is, Were these changes carried out in 2001 or on 2001 model year cars?

Is it also possible then, that I could buy a 2000 registered model which is a 2001MY that has the changes?

Thanks.

I have had my Maserati since 2003. It is a 2000 model.

The cam belt was changed recently by an independant Maserati agent. He says the cam chains must be changed every two years. It has done 34,000 miles and had its last service at Maranello at 30,000 miles, just before I bought it.

It has been seviced each year since but has not had the chains changed. Is this necessary?

RE: 3200GT Air conditioning!:

"Dear Enrico,

First I want to congratulate you for the excellent web site.

You really know that every MASERATI has a life of his own and sometimes there are only “peanuts” which has to known to make the life of a MASERATI owner happy again (when his machine is running……..).

I have a 3200 GT from 11/2000 and I have a problem with my air conditioning system.

An authorized MASERATI garage changed the aircool compressor about 6 month ago (the compressor was gridlocked). After the changing of the compressor the condenser was also changed because of a leakage. This was about 1 month ago (means in the period with low temperatures so that the aircool wasn't needed).

Now in the warmer period I concerned that my aircool don't work.

The compressor is running always and don't stop, but the system is not cooling down the inside of the car. I made a reset test with to get “trouble shooting codes”, but without results – it seems that the system is okay. The display is showing also the correct ambient temperature so that I think the sensor is okay.

What do you thing about it ?? Can you help me or can you give me any advise ?

Kind regards,

Marc."

RE: Enrico's rant?:

"Enrico,

You had a rant some time ago about people not passing on advice. (totally justified)

Someone was looking for disks for a 3200GT.

A few people I know inc me have got second hand ones from David Askew. Coupled them with EBC red pads and been okay.

My personal pitch on this is that the discs are OK if you want to clean them up and prepare them yourself and the pads from EBC are equivalent to the OEM part. Not better as some people state. Granted they are very good when kept warm but difficult when cold. Having said that this option costs circa £250 if you fit them yourself opposed to over £1000 at a dealer. No brainer eh!

John."

"Hi Enrico,

We've stripped some of the car down now... but it's proving difficult to identify the components.

Are there any other wiring index pages and something which tells us the physical location of the components? Basically item 10 for example is not a fuse, 8 seems to be the instrument panel but it doesn't say this on your key. We don't know where S83 or item 10 are but they are the most important.

Any help you can give will be most useful!

Thank you - and promise to keep you posted!!!

"Hello,

Thanks for the useful information on your web site.

Nice to see someone has taken the time to help us Italian car owners, an excellent collection of various tips and nice to read other peoples experiences.

Can you help me with a question?

I am trying to get Satellite Navigation fitted to my 3200 GT (2000 Manual), shopped around and eventually as Halfords were the only people who were interested in helping decided to sort it out myself, think most of it should be straight forward but one thing I know I will need to know is the location of the ‘Speed Pulse’ wire, can you help?

Thanks in anticipation.

Peter."

Reply from Myles:

"Hi Enrico,

Sorry for the delay in response but we had a very busy week!

The easiest place to locate the speed signal wire is behind the instrument binnacle. Remove this and the wire is in connector B (the one with 3 wires going into it) and is red/black in colour. This is according to the 3200GT workshop manual.

Myles."

RE: My 3200GT:

"Hi Enrico,

Keep up the good work! A question for the experts out there regarding my 2000 GTA:

One evening the brake warning light started flickering and since the next day has stayed on constantly. The handbook suggests this is only triggered by brake fluid reservoir level and front pad wear.

Very oddly the sensor on the front pads (though they still have about 4mm) is reading 'open' and the level switch on the fluid reservoir the same!!! So we tried to short out both the sensor and the switch just to check the warning light is OK and all I can get to happen is for the light to get very slightly brighter/dimmer by shorting the wires to the reservoir. The reservoir test switch has no effect!

Does all this work differently to how I imagine, and is there a wiring diagram for this light please?

Also, has anyone managed to source non-main dealer discs?

Thanks (and happy driving!)

Paras."

RE: 3200GT 'buzzing' noise!:

"Hi Enrico,

I have a loud buzzing noise coming from a black box just above the offside front wheel, the "box" is located in the cavity of the front wing and accessible (just) from the engine bay but can be reached by removing the cover/vent at the front of the offside wheel arch and reaching upwards, the unit only starts buzzing when the engine is running and seems to have some sort of pipe running from it, the main dealer said that it is a vacuum unit but would not be anymore specific but in any case they said "they all do that" and stated that they could not get a replacement.

Any ideas on what it is would be much appreciated.

Chris."

Reply from Myles:

"Hi Chris,

There is a vacuum pump and storage tank mounted in the offside front wheelarch, it isn’t normally noisy. It is either a faulty pump or there is vacuum leak causing the pump to be over worked causing it to be noisy.

A new pump is £116.52 + VAT available from Maranello Sales.

Cheers,

Myles."
